The hive's baseboard, a long shallow landing strip at the edge of the hives' inner darkness. There is little light inside the hive. Until you open it up... then all local light gets sucked in, and the sky turns dark around you.     I didn't really understand what was going on until the first time it seemed to happen to me, one afternoon, when I went out to the backyard, to open up my hives.
